Professor Yuuichi Kajiyama, Emeritus Professor of Buddhist Studies at
Kyoto University, died on March 29, 2004, at the age of 79. He treated
several topics in Buddhist studies with sharp insight and elucidated many
unexplored fields through his clear investigations. We could have expected
still many more results from him. This is indeed an irrecoverable loss to
the Buddhist Studies world. The 1989 volume (Rinsen,
Kyoto), a collection of his articles in Western languages was produced as
an expression of gratitude from his students, on the occasion of his
retirement from the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto University in March 1988.
Prof. Kajiyama's research covered several branches of Indian Mahāyāna
Buddhism. We can enumerate the following five topics as his main subjects:
(1) Madhyamaka philosophy, (2) Mahāyāna suutras, among others the
Prajňāpāramitāsūtra, (3) Buddhist logic and epistemology, (4) analysis of
the doctrinal positions of several Buddhist schools, and (5) Chinese and
Japanese Buddhist thought from the perspective of Indian Buddhist
philosophy. This publication of his collected articles therefore made
accessible in a single volume the fruits of more than thirty years of
research. Being out of print since longtime, its reprint had been awaited.
We are therefore glad to be able to present it now with minor emendations
on the occasion of the first anniversary of his
death. The publication of his post-1989 articles in
Western languages will be also undertaken by Rinsen in the near
future.
